New Restaurant Providing a Fresh Experience on the Square
The Square in Oxford, Mississippi, is one of the biggest tourist attractions for the city.
From restaurants such as City Grocery and Ajax’s Diner to stores like Square Books, businesses thrive on the Square due to foot traffic during Ole Miss game days, Thacker Mountain Radio airing on Thursday nights and chefs preparing delicious Southern cooking on a daily basis. The South in general may be known for its own style of “stick-to-your-ribs” cooking, but a new restaurant right off the Square provides a different option to the normal Southern staples.
Greenline opened its doors October 28, 2015 on 1002 Van Buren Avenue, right next to South Depot. The business caters to all crowds, but General Manager Adrian Tallant says they try to pull in a different type of customer than other restaurants on the Square.
“We don’t necessarily cater to the students, but rather locals here in Oxford,” Tallant said. “We get more locals than students at Greenline.”
Greenline offers a variety of signature salads, including an Oxford Cobb salad and a Health Nut salad, which features baby spinach, feta, tomatoes and walnuts with a lime cilantro vinaigrette.
“The Oxford Cobb and Superfood are usually my recommendations for first time customers,” Sara Keefe, line worker for Greenline, said. “My personal favorite to make for customers, however, is the Mediterranean. When you mix it all together, it looks like Christmas.”
Keefe works for both Greenline and South Depot. Both restaurants are affiliated with one another, but Keefe says Greenline’s atmosphere is different than South Depot’s.
“It’s just really calm and chill at Greenline,” Keefe says. “We’re busiest during lunch hours, but it is still a very calm and relaxed work environment.”
What makes Greenline unique however is their customizable salads and wraps. Options for these unique dishes include four different types of greens, 18 standard toppings and 13 different dressings and vinaigrettes. Premium toppings, such as white cheddar and avocado, are an additional charge. Green Line also has eight different proteins available for a small fee.
“Most people like to build their own salads,” Tallant said. “It’s more personal to have exactly what you want right in front of you and to create it as you like.”
Greenline’s décor inside matches their logo: white walls with green flora in white shelves. The restaurant is located in the old Callaway Music Company building, and they decided to keep the sign on the building as a reminder of the past.
“It’s a really good conversation piece for the restaurant,” Tallant said. “The locals here in Oxford really liked that we kept the sign, and the out-of-towners will ask about it.”
Greenline is opened from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the week.
