Eating Oxford
Enough with the Holiday Grub: Oxford Meals to Mix it Up
It’s after the holidays and the leftovers have become a bit tedious. Between the Christmas ham and turkey and dressing, to the foods of New Year’s Day, black-eyed peas and hog jowls, your taste buds are now screaming for a complete change of pace.
It’s time to turn to Oxford’s terrific plethora of eating establishments as an outsource for your holiday-pillaged palate.
Whether it’s a Muffuletta from Oby’s or Shrimp & Grits from City Grocery; a total break from anything remotely related to celebratory food is definitely in order.
So, without further ado, here are our Hotty Toddy recommendations for breakfast, lunch or dinner anytime and they’re a complete 180° from the two or three aluminum foiled-covered platters still sitting smugly in your refrigerator.
Big Bad Breakfast: A Big Bad Breakfast Plate will hit you just right, with two eggs cooked to order, served with your choice of bacon, patty sausage, chicken sausage, Andouille, or country ham; grits, home fries, or sweet potato hash; gravy (sausage, tomato, or red-eye): toast or biscuit. Beats the heck out of a leftover cabbage and greens omelet, right?
Oby’s: An Alligator Po-Boy with all the fixin’s, potato salad and a small cup of jambalaya on the side. Sounds like a Louisiana kind of night and very refreshing.
Gus’s Fried Chicken: A 12-piece assortment of World Famous Chicken as only Gus’s can do it, accompanied by some of the best mac & cheese, seasoned fries and Cole slaw you could ever eat. Yummy!
Abner’s: Or how about some of Abner’s famous chicken tenders, served with their delicious Abner’s sauce? Add garlic bread, Cole slaw and fries and get ready for a taste explosion.
McEwens: How about an evening dining on the Square and feasting on pan seared Chilean sea bass with orange soy glaze, miso broth, Mississippi shiitake mushroom risotto and sautéed spinach? It can’t get much better than that, right?
Locals Restaurant & Bar – A Pulled Pork Plate, smoked to perfection with BBQ sauce, served with your choice of two sides, maybe sweet potato fries and green beans, and some fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. You’re on your way now, right?
There you have it and if those choices don’t make your mouth water, there are many more great Oxford restaurants just waiting to tempt, tantalize and satiate you as only they can with each of their own individualistic menus.
So, move away from the hog jowls and go out to eat tonight!
