City Grocery Opens Kitchen Doors for Kelly English, Second Line 662

Big Bad Pop-ups are back in full swing, offering outstanding chefs a 48-hour stint in the City Grocery kitchen to prepare a unique menu of small plates fitted around a theme.

Ole Miss alum Kelly English of Second Line 662, soon to open at 208 South Lamar, stole the show last night with his Cajun-inspired dishes, ranging from $7 to $18, including boudin links, po’boys and king cake just in time for Mardi Gras.

Diners throughout the restaurant raved about the food, many getting multiple plates and sharing bites with the table to sample all the delicious dishes.

Many in attendance said they looked forward to some healthy competition on the Square between English and City Grocery’s John Currence but noted that while both have Southern flair, each chef has a style all their own.

Second Line 662 returns tonight at 6 p.m. The final week of Big Bad Pop-ups is Feb. 9 and 10 with Corbin Evans of the Oxford Canteen for The 132-foot Journey and a taste of north Mississippi alley food.
