Back in Top 10: Ole Miss has pair of dangerous games ahead
For some reason, Georgia jumps past Rebels in latest rankings because they beat Tennessee as Kentucky loss stings again
OXFORD, Miss. — Maybe the biggest news starting Florida Week is not that Ole Miss is back in the Top 10 in the media and coaches polls. Saturday’s game against the Gators starts the playoffs run.
“(Florida) is another must-win playoff game,” Rebels coach Lane Kiffin said last week. “We want to play it really well against these guys. They have really good players, and at times they’ve played well. It’s a place that most times people struggle to play in.”
Never mind the polls that came out Sunday with Ole Miss at No. 9. Somehow, Georgia’s win over Tennessee moved them up to No. 8 just a week after the Rebels dominated them here, 28-10. Apparently, last week has nothing to do with this week’s rankings.
You can put that one squarely on the 20-17 loss to Kentucky earlier in the year. The Bulldogs’ only league losses have been to Alabama and Ole Miss, both ranked teams. That one play could keep costing the Rebels, who do have the opportunity, though, to overcome that by continuing to win.
Oregon is still on top with Ohio State settling in at No. 2. That will likely work itself out in the Big Ten title game the first weekend in December. Both of those teams will be in the College Football Playoff.
The Rebels will, too, if they can handle Florida this week and win the Egg Bowl over Mississippi State the week after. We’ll see how the committee ranks Ole Miss on Tuesday night, but they could move up because the Vols lost and BYU got way too much help from officials’ calls to avoid dropping to unranked Utah this week.
The playoff picture is almost impossible to handicap, but the polls usually give a little indication and that is the Rebels could move from No. 11 up a little higher.
The SEC has Texas (3), Alabama (7) and Georgia (8) ranked ahead of them in the polls, but with the Longhorns and Crimson Tide likely to meet in the SEC Championship Game, one of them could drop down below Ole Miss. All of that is left to be determined over these final few weeks. The Rebels don’t have much of a prayer of being in that game.

Ole Miss to learn plenty with CFP rankings: Rebel Roundup
Your daily briefing on what’s going on with Ole Miss Athletics.

Ole Miss football will get a lot of its questions answered tonight.
The College Football Playoff Committee will release its third edition of its rankings at 6 p.m. tonight on ESPN. The Rebels figure to be included in the committee’s rankings, but where they’re ranked – and more importantly where other teams are ranked – will be telling to how clear the Rebels’ path to a playoff berth is.
The SEC has five teams with two losses and how the committee ranks those teams will determine who just needs to win out and who needs help.
For the Rebels, what will be important to know is where does the committee rank Georgia? How far does Tennessee fall after losing to the Bulldogs? Is LSU fall out of the top 25? How far does South Carolina rise after beating Missouri? Is Ole Miss ranked ahead of BYU (who lost to unranked Kansas, but still in contention for the Big 12 championship)? Where does the highest-ranked Group of 5 team rank?
How the committee answers those questions will go a long way in determining in if Ole Miss simply needs to just win its final two games or needs to rack up style points in those wins?
Of course, a loss will put the Rebels in the same boat as LSU. Out of the playoffs.

With a clear path to the playoff, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin talks to reporters
The Rebels’ head coach spoke with reporters about a variety of issues.
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin and his players came into the 2024 season with the loftiest goals and highest expectations an Ole Miss team has had since a Manning played quarterback.
Despite a shocking home loss to Kentucky and overtime loss to LSU, the Rebels are still in position to accomplish most of those goals. An conference championship isn’t likely, but a spot in the new 12-team playoff is and the Rebels’ path is crystal clear.
Beat Florida. Beat Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl.
If Ole Miss can win those two games, it should be in the playoff.
With that in mind, Kiffin started the week off with his weekly Monday press conference with reporters and talked about the playoffs and much more.
