Reese McIntyre: Ole Miss’ Offensive Line Rebounding from Injuries

Getting some players back could provide needed assistance to line that has made Jaxson Dart’s life hectic at times

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss offensive lineman Reese McIntyre wasn’t going to pin any of the Rebels’ problems on injuries. That’s almost a taboo subject for folks to talk about unless some coach is looking for an easy excuse.

Even though Ole Miss has created a little more drama for quarterback Jaxson Dart in the pocket lately (11 sacks in last three games), some of the walking wounded are getting back. Development of what was a group deeper than years past is also making a difference.

“It helps because it pushes everybody to be your best because you got eight-nine guys who can play,” McIntyre said Monday. “It makes you go harder because you got eight guys in the room who can all play and all played a lot of ball. It helps all of us out.”

McIntyre was not supposed to be the team’s primary starting center going into August practices. Injuries to Caleb Warren and Gerquan Scott got him where he has had to start all seven games.

For a guy with just 47 appearances and four starts previously, he got his chance. He’s trying to take advantage of that.

“When stuff gets hard, just fall back on your training and trust what you’ve been taught,” he said. “Just taking it one play at a time and flushing the negative plays and going to the next play, going to the next play. Honing in on technique, hand placement, footwork, stuff like that.”

After giving up six sacks in the overtime loss at LSU, Rebels coach Lane Kiffin did about the only thing he could do later — move forward. He knew he had a bye week coming up.

“You’ve just got to flush it and go,” McIntyre said. “Oklahoma is coming in, so it will be a good challenge for us this week. Just take your mind off it (games lost) and focus on Oklahoma. They got a good team, we got a good challenge ahead of us.”

Times have gotten a little tougher on the Sooners in their first SEC season than expected. It has led to the firing of offensive coordinator Seth Littrell over the weekend after a lackluster performance.

Kickoff for Ole Miss against Oklahoma on Saturday is 11 a.m. and will be on ESPN. Fans can also listen to the game on The Ole Miss Radio Network.

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin on the sidelines against Arkansas

Ole Miss football will get a lot of its questions answered tonight.

The College Football Playoff Committee will release its third edition of its rankings at 6 p.m. tonight on ESPN. The Rebels figure to be included in the committee’s rankings, but where they’re ranked – and more importantly where other teams are ranked – will be telling to how clear the Rebels’ path to a playoff berth is.

The SEC has five teams with two losses and how the committee ranks those teams will determine who just needs to win out and who needs help.

For the Rebels, what will be important to know is where does the committee rank Georgia? How far does Tennessee fall after losing to the Bulldogs? Is LSU fall out of the top 25? How far does South Carolina rise after beating Missouri? Is Ole Miss ranked ahead of BYU (who lost to unranked Kansas, but still in contention for the Big 12 championship)? Where does the highest-ranked Group of 5 team rank?

How the committee answers those questions will go a long way in determining in if Ole Miss simply needs to just win its final two games or needs to rack up style points in those wins?

Of course, a loss will put the Rebels in the same boat as LSU. Out of the playoffs.

With a clear path to the playoff, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin talks to reporters

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin and his players came into the 2024 season with the loftiest goals and highest expectations an Ole Miss team has had since a Manning played quarterback.

Despite a shocking home loss to Kentucky and overtime loss to LSU, the Rebels are still in position to accomplish most of those goals. An conference championship isn’t likely, but a spot in the new 12-team playoff is and the Rebels’ path is crystal clear.

Beat Florida. Beat Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl.

If Ole Miss can win those two games, it should be in the playoff.

With that in mind, Kiffin started the week off with his weekly Monday press conference with reporters and talked about the playoffs and much more.
